Green Building - Green Home Construction

Sunny Day Homes is a small, family-owned general contracting firm that has been incorporated since 1997. We came to Boone NC in 1998 and quickly made it our home. Over the last ten years, our company has grown steadily from a one-man repair and remodeling service to a crew of five full-time carpenters and helpers. Our years of experience in the high country NC make it possible for us to bring together the carpenters, subcontractors and suppliers necessary to make your project a success.

Our place in the market is in the middle price range while providing high levels of service, quality and integrity. We intend to remain small enough to give each person and project the personal attention they deserve, yet large enough to handle substantial projects in a timely and efficient fashion.

We maintain both liability and workman’s compensation insurance. Our company carries a NC residential contractors license, NC License #46064.

Sunny Day Homes is proud to be a member of the Boone Chamber of Commerce, the Western NC Green Building Council, and the High Country Homebuilders Association.

Our Commitment
Our passion is in building (and rebuilding) homes that are good for the people who live in them as well as this little green and blue planet we live on. We are committed both personally and professionally to working toward greater sustainability . We believe that by approaching each project with care, integrity and an awareness of our participation in the local community, as well as the global ecology, we can support the work of those leading the way towards prosperity and sustainability in every aspect of society.

Who We Are

Sam Zimmerman - President
I first got involved in building when my Dad employed my brothers and me as his “helpers” while he remodeled the homes we grew up in. I worked off and on over the years in new-home construction, remodeling, commercial renovation, and all kinds of small home repairs. I became a Licensed General Contractor in 1999. Recently, I taught two semesters of construction technology in the Technology Department at ASU.

I have been a member of the Western NC green Building Council for years and I recently completed the course work to obtain the NAHB Certified Green Professional designation.

I am a member of the High Country Homebuilders Association and serve on the board of directors as well as serving as co-chairman of the Green Building Committee.

I have had a life-long interest in renewable energy and environmentally responsible approaches to building and agriculture, which has guided much of the direction of our work at Sunny Day Homes over the years.

I hold a master’s degree in education and have also learned much as I have wandered around most of this country the world and worked in several other businesses, and educational organizations of various types.

Joan Zimmerman - Vice President
Joan handles the financials for the business. She is also a Marriage and Family Therapist, and works in the community with families impacted by substance abuse.

The Bosses

Phillip Sommers – Project Manager
Phil has been building since they invented wood. He is a licensed contractor himself, and an accomplished carpenter as well. Phil has built and remodeled many, many homes, both in Washington State and since he moved here in 1997. Phil is also Canadian, which we try not to bother him about, since he was willing to serve our country in the 82nd Airborne when he was needed.

Tim Brown – Crew Leader and Site Manager
Tim is the engine that pulls the train. He has built everything, knows how to do anything; he’s there early, and works hard at it all day long. If you don’t want to pull your own weight, you won’t last long around Tim. Tim grew up a farm boy in Nebraska, and is one of the few men I have met who did a proper apprentice training for carpenters. He left a successful building business of his own in Florida some years back with his wife, Penny, so they could raise their youngest, Cody, in the mountains. We’re glad they did.

The Guys

Joe Brown (no relation to Tim)
Joey isn’t afraid of the heavy loads and brings his steady, hard-working, reliable, good-natured self to work every day. We couldn’t ask for a better “main beam” than Joey. He is a newlywed compared to the rest of us – he and Melissa just tied the knot in July of 2007.

Mike Yates (also no relation to Tim)
Mike is a cattle farmer who works with us so he can keep farming. Mike and his wife Deanna have a great little fella named Jonas, who looks just like Dad. Mike has a good understanding of how a building goes together and isn’t afraid of high places, or extremely tight, dark crawl-spaces. He is also the guy who knows where everything is in the tool trailer.

Adam Oakley
Adam is an ASU student in the Construction Management major. He was a stand-out in construction tech class, and came on the crew for the summer, and will continue part-time this year.
